Kimekomi is a traditional Japanese craft that has been practised for around 300 years, since the Edo period. A design is carved into a form made from paulownia wood powder and natural wheat-starch paste. The edges of fabric are then carefully tucked into the grooves by hand. No needle or thread is used.

For your Daruma, you’ll choose from Nishijin-ori textiles, a weaving tradition with a history of more than 1,200 years. The fabrics come from our family’s treasured collection, gathered over nearly a century. For more than 80 years, our family has shared the art of kimekomi through its workshops.

Daruma dolls are widely loved as symbols of perseverance and good fortune. Their rounded shape and ability to return upright represent resilience and an indomitable spirit.

A Moment for Kimekomi

Inspired by the mindful spirit of Zen, kimekomi invites you to slow down and turn your attention inward, one careful movement at a time. Choose a piece of historic Japanese fabric that speaks to you, and create your own Daruma, infusing it with your hopes and wishes.

As you work, enjoy Japanese tea, traditional sweets and onigiri. We invite you to experience this peaceful moment—made just for you—and take home your Daruma, along with a piece of Japanese history and craftsmanship.
